App Smart Extra: Password-Protecting Photos

If you’ve ever worried about someone stealing your logins and passwords, this week’s App Smart column offers some solace, in the form of secure password keepers.

That’s fine for keeping strangers away, maybe. But what about friends?

They’re not likely to steal your passwords, but they may be tempted to check out your photos, and you may not want to share every shot you own.

Private Pics ($4 on iPhones) blocks certain photos from anyone who doesn’t have your password. That way you can hand off your phone to friends and colleagues, without fretting that they’ll discover your latest corporate espionage activities or see pictures from the weekend bash they missed.

The app is easy to use, but prospective users should know that the app can hide only photos, not videos.

Android users can try PhotoVault ($1), which has similar functionality and has received good reviews in the Android Market. BlackBerry users can try Secure Photo ($3), but this app is new and has received just one (highly critical) review in the AppWorld store.
