**Your Favorite Movies, Re-Watched**

New York Times opinion writer and bestselling author Lindy West was once the in-house movie critic for Seattle's alternative newsweekly The Stranger, where she covered film with brutal honesty and giddy irreverence. In Shit, Actually, Lindy returns to those roots, re-examining beloved and iconic movies from the past 40 years with an eye toward the big questions of our time: Is Twilight the horniest movie in history? Why do the zebras in The Lion King trust Mufasa-WHO IS A LION-to look out for their best interests? Why did anyone bother making any more movies after The Fugitive achieved perfection? And, my god, why don't any of the women in Love, Actually ever fucking talk?!?!

From
Forrest Gump, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, and Bad Boys II, to Face/Off, Top Gun, and The Notebook, Lindy combines her razor-sharp wit and trademark humor with a genuine adoration for nostalgic trash to shed new critical light on some of our defining cultural touchstones-the stories we've long been telling ourselves about who we are. At once outrageously funny and piercingly incisive, Shit, Actually reminds us to pause and ask, "How does this movie hold up?", all while teaching us how to laugh at the things we love without ever letting them or ourselves off the hook.

Shit, Actually is a love letter and a break-up note all in one: to the films that shaped us and the ones that ruined us. More often than not, Lindy finds, they're one and the same.

My partner and I love reading this book aloud on car trips. It is such a fun way to remember movies from when we were younger and we find so much of the book laugh out loud funny!! I can't wait for Lindy West to write another book like this one!

As usual, hilarious takes on movies from Lindy West. Found myself waking my spouse up laughing while reading this is in bed. Also, she is right about nearly everything, even about “Love Actually”, which I still enjoy watching every Christmas.

I am afraid that people on the train might have mistaken my muffled laughter under my mask with sunglasses on as sobbing, when in fact I was having outbursts of true, needed and genuine laughter. The dopamine fits that this brought me were so welcome that I am giving the book to several people for the holidays in the hopes of spreading the joy. The rating system alone was so clever that I want to rate everything forever using it. I can say without exaggeration that the author made my life better and lit up my brain in a time when nothing else seems to.

In "Shit, Actually", Lindy West returns to her roots as a movie critic, and reassess movies that were popular back in the 1990's and 2000's. I believe some of the essays are from her time at Jezebel, and some are new. Because we are of similar age, many of the movies she selects to re-hash here are ones I know well, and were often major cultural moments when they were released. Many of the movies she writes about are action movies (Face/Off, The Rock, Bad Boys 2, The Terminator 2, Jurassic Park), while others are more of an eclectic mix of romance (The Notebook, Love, Actually (her essay on this movie is where the book's title originates)), fantasy (Harry Potter), and drama (Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption). She rates all of these movies based on what she calls the Fugitive DVD scale. She considers The Fugitive to be the perfect movie (not much of an argument from me here). This was a bit of a mixed bag, which is expected considering the subjectivity of movies, so if it was a movie I did not know well, or was not my thing, it was hard to keep my interest when she went into depth on plot lines. The movies I either loved or stuck with me, I thoroughly enjoyed her takedowns. Identifying the plot holes in Harry Potter? Been there! How so many romance movies are clearly made by a man for women? Definitely. For fans of pop culture, especially those who grew up in the 90's, this will be a hoot!

While the author obviously loves movies and embraces some of the ludicrous tropes therein, her wit is most incisive when she’s either offended or flabbergasted by a “beloved” film’s plot or characterization. Every paragraph includes a chuckle (and often laugh-out-loud lines) that will tickle even fans of the movies she eviscerates so entertainingly. Treat yourself to this cinephile’s diatribe for Hollywood to do better.

This is very funny and laugh out loud in some parts. I am taking off one star because the quality of the hardcover book is not worth the price tag. It’s like a cheap book club binding with no dust cover. I think $24 is way too pricey for this.

Hilarious! Just what I needed these days. I've seen most of the films she revisits in this book, and I feel better than ever about skipping The Notebook.

This book is amazing. It's exactly the distraction I needed from this dumpsterfire of a news cycle. I cackled out loud multiple times.

1.0 out of 5 stars The title says it all... these should not be confused with film reviews

This review is for the non-American reader.

I don't get what all the fuss is about. Lindy West isn't particularly funny, her writing style is like a series of noisy twitter rants and most of her critical analysis bears little or no resemblance to any of the films I actually watched. It feels like being in a cinema with a couple of loudmouths sitting behind you, commentating on the plot, spitting popcorn onto the back of your head and screeching uncontrollably at their own hilarious gags.

There are lots of caps locked sentences with a row of exclamation marks to follow. An audio version of this book would be someone shouting at you. I may have laughed a couple of times during her destruction of Love, Actually, from which the book takes its name, but that was about it.

Never mind, I'm certain her friends in Seattle think she's a genius. And if you do a review of this book, don't mention the title, as Amazon's AI bots will reject it. How do you explain that?

A bit of a mixed bag, depending on the movie. But most of reviews were laugh out loud funny. Love her writing style and sense of humour.
