This summer’s sculptural earrings take your jewellery from accessory to art piece

Artfully silhouetted, sumptuously textured and exaggerated in size, summer’s most scintillating accessories are a pair of earrings that command attention. Labels from Emilio Pucci to Stella McCartney celebrated a large and in charge attitude by featuring a range of outsized earrings in their runway shows, punctuating both day and eveningwear. And at the recent MET Gala in New York, red carpet stars such as singer Teyana Taylor and actor Brie Larson wore whoppers done up in gorgeously hewn gold.

While enormous earrings gained traction as a video-call fashion trend throughout COVID-19 lockdowns – what better way to create visual interest on a stale computer screen? – they show no signs of slowing down as a statement making accessory now that we’ve returned to the real world.

A range of Canadian brands including Enarmoured, Dean Davidson and Ora-C favoured a fulsome lobe look in recent collections, and Tiffany & Co.’s offering of pieces designed by Elsa Peretti includes an opulent ear accent that has a cascading effect.

For Toronto-based jewellery designer Corrine Anestopoulos of Biko, an abundant earring shape is a pure joy to craft. “When I’m designing, I always start with the idea for a key editorial piece,” she says. “Jewellery has the power to transform your mood, and a statement piece can give you confidence. You’re ready to tackle your day when you feel extra bright.”

Anestopoulos also emphasized their versatility. “You can wear them with everything,” she says. “They go nicely with a T-shirt, yet they can also go with a formal dress.” And there’s nothing quite like the glamourous get-up that’s created when a pair of sizable earrings are worn with a swimsuit – particularly as it allows for easy poolside-to-dinner outfit changes. Who’s ready to make a splash?
