tl;dr: I have 3 Beta Minecraft gift cards. I am holding 3 competitions to give them away. I would like your help coming up with deciding on which competitions I hold. The categories can be Minecarts, Redstone, Modding, Architecture. Be creative.
Honestly, my life is pretty good right now. I'm holding down a well-paying job, serving in the military, and pulling down more money each month than I honestly need. All of my expenses are paid for, and after putting some of this money towards savings (I mean, I'm not totally fiscally irresponsible), I put some into hobbies.
I play Magic, various board games, and I build computers. However, another hobby I'm fairly passionate about is... Minecraft.
I've already bought myself a copy of Minecraft, as well as both my brothers and my girlfriend, all of whom love the game. And since Beta has come out, I have bought several other gift codes which currently are just sitting in my profile, going to waste.
I could give them away, because that would help some new members in this community get non-pirated versions of the game. However, I think I could use these little gift codes to better effect.
I like Minecart stations, and I love redstone circuitry.
To put this simply, I currently have 3 gift codes (and am willing to buy more if this turns out well...) which I am hoping to give away as prizes to the winners of a few different competitions.
This is not a joke, nor a scam. I will not ask for any personal information. The only requirements are a forum account & a bit of innovation.
I want to host 3 contests, commissioning the design of three different projects... Likely one in Minecarts/transportation, another in redstone circuitry, and a third in architecture. Other possibilities include building mods & whatnot. I just want to see some contribution to the Minecraft community. Some schematics & new ideas that I, and other Minecraftians, can use within our worlds.
So, let me as you, my fellow Steve's, what would you like designed? I need a general theme for each project, as well as restrictions. Below is an example of how I want these ideas formatted.
Theme: Minecarts
Description: Build a Minecart station with two outgoing tracks & two incoming tracks.
Win Condition: Build the smallest station. (Length x Width x Height, each must be less than 10)
So each player would try to build a Minecart station which has 2 incoming tracks and 2 outgoing tracks, and they must try to make it as small as possible.
Note: This is only a suggestion. Don't start attempting to build for the aforementioned competition as it may not be one of the three I choose. This thread is only to get ideas on what various Minecraftians would like to see designed.
Theme: Minecarts/Redstone Description: Build a device with several levers, one for each type of common material (dirt, gravel, sand, cobblestone, stone.. etc.). Whenever a player hits a certain lever (ie the dirt lever) the device should summon a storage cart full of dirt. There should also be a return button which returns the storage cart back to the storage room. Win Condition: Take as little space as possible. Create call levers for at least 10 different resources. (Dirt, gravel, sand, wood, cobblestone, ores, stone, logs, miscellaneous, tools)
Theme: Transportation Description: Build an elevator. There should be 2 levers on the bottom level, and 2 levers on the top level: call and send. The call lever brings the elevator to your current location if it is not already. The send lever should send the elevator to the top. (IE: If you are at the bottom, you can hit the call lever and it will bring the elevator down to you. Then you get in and hit the send button, which rockets you to the surface.) Win Condition: The elevator should reach the surface faster than a boosted minecart. The elevator should not kill the player. Take up as little length & width as possible. Try to keep the minimum height of the elevator no greater than 12 blocks (you should be able to create a duplicate of your elevator that is only 12 blocks high) but may be extended to as high as the user needs. Using a boat as the elevator is suggested. If the elevator can stop at multiple floors at the flick of a switch +1
Suggestions:
1. Minecart storage system - One input/output track, put the storage cart on a track and pull a lever. If you want to access that material again pull the lever again.
2. Timer - Build a redstone device that counts down from 9 to 0 in ten seconds.
3. Architecture - Build a home designed to take advantage of the properties of redstone (narrow halls for arrow traps, open areas to do wiring, etc.)

On an unrelated note what boardgames do you play?
never heard of the second one, bet you probably got one of those though
on another note, this seems pretty cool, and thanks for serving the country :3

[ontopic] 1. The first challenge seems too easy. However, what about a device which stacks storage carts on top of one another, and each time you hit a lever, a booster whisks away the bottom cart, and puts it back on top... Essentially a scrolling inventory. You'd be able to stack a large number of chests this way, while the user could only see 2-3 chests at a time. Each time he hits the lever, those chests disappear, go on top of the stack, and he sees the next three. This has practical applications. I like this.
2. There are already a multitude of clocks.
3. This could be possible. I'm thinking more strongly theme based.. Perhaps having people build a castle prepared for siege, or something along those lines. In truth, the architecture part is the one I'm least enthusiastic about and may replace with a 'build a mod' competition, for the Minecrafters who are talented programmers, but aren't too much into the actual building and whatnot that is part of the game.
I think the best members of any particular community are those who have a vested interest in it. Redstone circuit designers, architects, mechanics, and modders all positively influence the community in a number of profound ways and I am looking to help to create the spark in a few new players in order to help create more of these people.[/ontopic]
[offtopic]I am actually starting a club at my local college for boardgaming. I play Risk 2210, Settlers of Catan, Axis & Allies and Diplomacy atm. As my club starts collecting fees, I plan on largely expanding that collection. [/offtopic]
Sorry I didn't have time to elaborate my ideas further :tongue.gif:
These are the things I meant to add to my original ideas
1. Have a lever for each common block type (stone, dirt, cobble, gravel, sand, glass, wood and a tool chest),
@ your idea
With current booster technology I don't think would be possible to make three rows, two is theoretically doable though
2. Hook it up to a digital display, for added challenge make sure it can display letters as well
3. I agree with you on this one, a mod contest would be better then just a generic building one

Ah we don't need to have the game to participate. Posting to watch this topic.
Indeed. This topic is meant as a way to either help piraters acquire a legit version of Minecraft, or to help existing members get some free codes to give out to friends. Either way it helps the community. However, unless people get a little enthusiastic and I get a bit of participation from the community, I may have to hold the contest off until 11/11/11. If Beta players wind up getting free DLC, Beta accounts will be worth a fair bit more.
How about a challenge where you see who can build the most aesthetically pleasing ..anything with only a stack of logs (and the stuff you craft from them ofcourse).
The purpose of this challenge is to create things which have practical applications to the Minecraft community. It's not often that I have only X logs and I have to build something. However, I often build minecart stations and wonder, "Can I make this more efficiently?"
Also, I will not start the competition until after 1.5 is released so that those competing can use powered rails.
Im fairly new to Minecraft and have done more research than playing the game mostly ...so forgive any noobness :smile.gif:. Being an Electronics Engineer and working on circuits has taught me that with just basic logic devices (and/or/nor/jk flipflops/etc) anything can be built (circuit wise). Here in the game of Minecraft you are provided tho's basics and a whole world to implement it in :biggrin.gif:.
That being said, may I suggest building something simple like a traffic counter for main streets of citys that have been built on MPS (jus for fun). May have a binary readout with a shift register(for tho's who can read binary) or make a redstone 7 segment display circuit you can see from up high (may be too complicated for some).
Like I said, sry if this has been done allready. Theres sooo much community here and people with Ideas.
Best minecraft song created with redstone/noteblocks
NO JUKEBOXES!!!!!!
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
note: Then I mention a group of people in my posts, i mean the majority of information i have seen from that group, and my statement may not be accurate for every individual in that group.

Hmm, I don't want to make people do displays because those can often times be more difficult. However a device which notes when a player/object passes by and lights up a torch / plays a tune to inform the user is a simple security device which has been done countless times. Perhaps see if someone can find a way to do a trap which is mob/player sensitive?
And about the idea, "Best minecraft song.", that project is TOO lengthy for what I am wanting.
I dont quite understand what you are trying to say, could you dumb it down for me please so i can try and throw out some ideas. xD (I really want to try this as i dont have a minecraft membership but REALLY want to play with friends, alot of the kids at my school play it including like 6 of my friends) )
because you know, it give me a chance to finally win a competition. I honestly don't recall ever winning one. :sad.gif:
Short stories are something that do not add to my gameplay experience. I want something that contributes into the community in a manner I can tangibly feel... I use minecart stations, storage systems, etc, etc. I don't read short stories and they will add nothing to my experience.

If you're looking for more games check out Dominion, Race for the Galaxy (if you're willing to scale the vertical learning curve) and Last Night on Earth
1. I like this idea.
2. Still, no. It has been done already.

Right now I am asking ideas for these competitions.
I want the goal of the competitions to be to build something that is useful in Minecraft (ie: Minecart Station, storage system, etc, etc)

Though it would give me a reason to follow through on a couple of ideas...
