Notch said there would be sea monsters. So as with dragons I created my own model of what I would like to see in game.
I really wanted something you could just see undulating through the water, with fins that breach the surface. I also wanted it to look threatening, but I would like it to be NEUTRAL, so something that's more minding its own business but'll eat you up if you bug it.
Behavior: Neutral, swims around, maybe eats other smaller sea life every once in a while. If you bother it it gets mean. No idea what it should drop if killed. Health: Decent amount. Probably around 8 sword slashes.Probably around 12 stone sword slashes Maybe something where you have to damage each segment enough before it dies? Damage: Chompy chomp hits for 1 heart. Maybe some sort of dive attack where it rockets up from beneath hits for 2. Reconsidering attacks. It would probably incorporate a swimming-charge attack, for a large amount of damage. Length: probably around 16 blocks. Sizeable, you won't see it in rivers, but small enough so that it's at home in a sea such as this:
There's passive and there's aggressive. You're suggesting something in the middle. I'd like to see this and more defensive (monsters that react self-defensively) mobs.
Also, this particular suggestion looks bad ass. You should be able to saddle those Gyaradoses. :biggrin.gif:
Sounds perfect. I was not expecting something this good when i clicked, but your dragon model was good (if a bit oversized) so i thought i would give you a chance. The attacks could use more work, its bite should do two damage, and it should jump out of the water during its attack, so it can hit players in boats. Or, it could just be capable of breaking boats, which would create a awesome new gameplay aspect. Maybe wandering sharks could then attack the player. Make seas actually seem threatening, as while they feel vast and expansive, they're pretty much the safest place for you to go. Nothing spawns in water, and if you get far enough from land nothing will be able to get to you. I am so making a fishing hut once fishing comes out.
my only problem is that if I encounter and just so happen to muster the courage to fight it, and somehow manage to bring it down 1)whats it gonna drop to reward me for such effort, 2) its gonna drop whatever that thing is somewhere in the middle of the ocean, which will be nearly impossible to collect as it sinks deep into the murky abyss.

Drops scales which can make scale armor, which is on par with diamond. If you want it, you gonna have ta dive!

Yea, its based slightly on Gyarados's design. What can I say... but yea, its not aggressive, it won't attack on sight, but its not passive either, because it might engage with something more vulnerable than itself.

Just want to say that I love your monster designs. I wish Notch would add these.
Thanks, so do I...

Wow! I was expecting something alot more childish. That model is inspired, and very minecrafty. If the behavioural animation is doable this would be lovely. It might be tricky to prevent it accidently running aground though. Maybe restrict it to a certain depth?
Yea, I don't play the childish card. I'd personally just keep it from getting too close to the shore, since these would be more open-sea creatures. Would also make trapping them difficult.

Give it more health ( =
Twelve slashes with a diamond sword then.

I know my dragon proposition was maybe a little overzealous on the size, I need to tone it down a little...
Yea, I sorta rushed out the attacks, I had the post constructed and then I was like "Oh yea... attacks... uhm... BITING... and something else thats sorta vague". It should definitely be able to break boats, but since its neutral, it should maybe be something that it does on accident, perhaps if it surfaces while you're cruising over it.

That's some good monster design!
Btw, what software did you use?
3DS Max 2010 from start to finish. Photoshop for the textures.

Bingo. Could also make it so the item either A) won't fall below a certain depth, or, :cool.gif: floats.

I love your models man! you should consider working for notch :tongue.gif:
Joy, my idea may be implemented if this ever does! If notch implements the idea of placing to craftbenches together to make a bigger 3x6 grid, you could make bigger boats that are immune to sea serpents. I think twelve diamond slashes is a bit high... Maybe stone... That would be 36 hearts.
I really like your models :smile.gif: My only suggestion would be to the change the sea serpents fins a little the look kinda awkward, but its a great model i always wondered how a minecrafty dragon/sea serpent would look

I'm happy with how the fin is shaped, but I agree that the fin texture is less than stellar. I'll improve at a later date.
I'd also like to say I'm really impressed with this model and your other two models, like the others have said you have captured the essence of minecraft, maybe you should show notch your handy-work?
Very cool model. I would hope that Notch, if he were to make something like this, would make the head the only part that moves initially, and each body segment follow it. That way it won't look ridiculous when it turns, its body will never run into the land during a turn, and you get a cool snakey effect with its movement.

I would if I knew how. I'm hoping he peeks in here at these forums.

Yea, thats the idea I had in mind. It wouldn't look right if it just pivoted on one center axis.
