Basically, with this mod you start with 3 hearts. Each heart has 4 quarters, instead of minecrafts 2 halves. So 3 hearts with this mod is equivalent to 6 hearts in vanilla. It will be tough surviving with only 12 hit points, so you will need to search for dungeons in order to find heart pieces. After finding 4 heart pieces you can craft them in a 2x2 fashion to get a heart container. You can consume a heart container to gain one extra permanent heart. You can also acquire heart containers by defeating bosses like the wither and the enderdragon.
To make it even harder, the hunger bar will no longer have an effect on your regeneration. To get health back you will have to break tall grass or use potions. When breaking tall grass there is a 1/20 chance of it dropping a heart. On picking it up you will be healed by 4 hit-points, which is the equivalent of one heart.
The mod also adds in fairy fountains which can be found rarely underground.
They will contain 1-3 fairies. On colliding with them you become fully healed at the cost of their lives, so if you want them to live make sure you stay at a distance! You can catch them by right clicking them with a bottle in hand. If you die while carrying a bottled fairy somewhere in your inventory you will be revived. You can also right click the bottled fairy to refill your hearts.
Don't worry about the fairies wandering away from the fountain, they won't leave!

It would be extremely cool if I actually added a sort of mask morph system like zelda...
This gives me ideas..!

I wonder if iChun will help you on those.. I think yes. It would indeed be interesting if you could wear a mask of the mob you want to be and then you're that Mob (Unless you take it off).

This mod would be useful for the hardcore LOZ fans who want to play Minecraft, LOZ style.

Do you reckon it should be just minecraft mob masks, or actual LOZ masks? Like a goron mask or a zora mask that give you abilities?
This mod changes something simple but really is amazing. I like the Zelda style health system. Starting out with three hearts makes everything seem more dangerous and later on after finding a lot of heart pieces and armor everything seems to be poking your health with a cardboard sword (I Grabbed some enchanted diamond armor + default Maxed out hearts on a test world to try the endgame experience).
It's too bad the heart items don't make the iconic zelda noise when picked up. This mod really needs to add that noise to feel complete. Also, there is a lack of red potions / pre-nether healing methods. Perhaps you could add fairies / some method of finding red potions (Villages, Drop from grass, Dungeon chests, Mobs)?

I'm glad you like it!
I'm sure I could find the zelda heart noise and easily add it, but I don't want to infringe any copyright... Any suggestions on this?
I was actually planning on adding fairies. Would it be cool if I added randomly generated underground fairy fountains that contain a finite amount of fairies that you can catch in a bottle?
I gave in and added the Ocarina of Time sounds for picking up hearts and using heart containers.
Also added a particle effect similar to the taming one which will play when you use a heart container.
Update will be out soon.
I can't really offer any suggestions or advice on copyright infringement as I'm not a lawyer. However, You might try checking out some free to use sounds and see what you think would fit. As for the fairy fountains it sounds like a amazing idea. Minecraft already has bottles to catch them.

I guess it comes down to fair use. If I only use 2 sounds that are a combined total of 6 seconds long out of an entire zelda game full of hundreds of sounds, I'm sure there shouldn't be an issue.
Working on the fairy fountains now.

i'm sure you won't infringe any copyright, just look at the legend gear mod..
I'm no expert, but its highly unlikely there would be any issue making use of a couple sound files as long as your not selling it. Just wouldn't be cost effective for them to send lawyers / the legal system after you for a mine craft mod.
I am looking forward to see where this mod goes. Really like the Zelda style heart system and it adds a bit more 'survival' to the survival experience. My only concern is about healing. Maybe just reduce the amount of huger healing (say 25% of current speed?) while keeping the random hearts from grass (and mob drops?)
Also maybe adding in a master sword energy beam style effect when at full life and using a diamond sword would be pretty sweet.
With the fairies in a bottle, any way to make it so they function like in zelda, where when you die they heal you some instead of death?

I was thinking about that, but I would rather just add different ways to heal yourself. Late game I don't think this would be an issue, but it just adds a bit of a challenge to the early game to make you think about whether you should be going out during the night or not.
That actually would be pretty neat. Maybe I could add a master ore that can be found in dungeon chests which you can temper your sword with in the anvil to give it extra strength and that ability?

Thats the plan with the fairies.
