Welcome to the Puzzles of Asteroid 5251. This map combines the administration building with the Pipeworks Challenge, for anyone who likes puzzles but doesn't care for the Survival/Adventure that is Asteroid 5251.
FIVE!... err, FOUR devious puzzles and ONE easy puzzle.
Beat them all, and win the title: PUZZLE MASTER.
Beat them all and find the hidden vaults, and win the title: MASTER PUZZLE MASTER.
Beat them all without ever using sprint, and win the title: SUPREME PUZZLE MASTER.
Beat them all without ever using sprint and find the hidden vaults, and win the title: SUPREME MASTER PUZZLE MASTER
Oh, BTW, how did you like the first diamond puzzle? It is the one on ground level I think. I wasn't sure if it would be hard or not, but it was the most fun to make.
In the Asteroid 5251 Surventure map, I give more information on the pipeworks challenge. It is possible to loose the game by ineffecient item placement. It is possible to loose the game by failing certain jumps. I designed that puzzle so that crazy long jumps weren't a feature, so falling isn't that big of an issue, but you gotta watch your feet. It may take several attempts or more for most to finish it. It's one of those puzzles you can play around with and find better ways of doing things.
As far as the golden apple puzzles, if you use what you have to go for the chests you can reach, you will get the general idea of how it works. Getting new items allows you to do new things, so work with what you've got and take the chests contents as you can get to them.
As far as I know, you are the first one to finish the Pipeworks Challenge.
If you had no pistons or planks, then your score is 1. I'm not sure what the maximum score could be, though I do know 10 is possible. For those who feel lucky, there are at least several hazardous jump manuvers that would increase the score to 12-13. Higher scores may be possible, but I consider a 10 a 'perfect' score, and it's possible nobody will get 10 legit.
Pipeworks was really great. Finished with 9 items remaining (1 plank, 5 ladders, 3 pistons), though I'm sure it is possible to do better.
I must admit that I used several save folders :unsure.gif: .... I hope that is not considered cheating cause other then that it was 100% legit.
Most difficult part was starting off as I was looking for a clue somewhere but then it was really fun and it contained good logical puzzle value.
I can send you my final save if you are interested in how I did it.
Anyways great job man, keep up the good work!!
Edit: Just a suggestion : maybe scoring could be weighted, as ladders and pistons are more precious.
Using saves is different from not using saves, but you figured it out, so you have won the map, and nine is really good. I originally was scoring nine when I was beta testing it, and found an extra shortcut just before release. Ten is the best I know of without using long/dangerous jumps. I figure someone could score 12-13 if they were crazy enough and didn't rage quit. That's why I consider 10 to be a 'perfect' score.
You're right about ladders and pistons being worth more, and I hadn't really thought about it like that in relation to score. I don't know if it's possible, but if it was, it could be used to get above 10 scores.
glad you enjoyed the map, and thanks for the complements. :smile.gif:
I'm currently working on a new puzzle map, so I'm curious for those who have played the golden apple puzzles, and the diamond puzzle on the first floor, did you win? How would you rate the difficulty? Did you enjoy them? Would you like to play more puzzles in similar styles?
"Attention, test prisoners attempting to escape through the air ducts. I don't know what nonsense you learned on TV, but in real life, air ducts just go to the air conditioning unit. It's also pretty dusty, so if you've got asthma, chances are you're gonna die up there. And we'll be smelling it for weeks because, again, the air ducts aren't a secret escape hatch, they're how we ventilate the facility." - Cave Johnson
You know, I just downloaded this. So, I had no idea what to do on the pipeworks challenge, so I started scaling the walls. Made it really high up. Then I accidentally fell off a pipe. I quit right then because of how long it took to scale the walls with nothing.
Sorry for such a long necropost, but I saw that the author is still active, and having just finished the Pipeworks, I thought I'd chime in on my experience.
Not too many have posted final scores for the Pipeworks, but I'd like to share my experience. A score of 10 or higher is definitely possible, even without sprinting. My first run through, I ended with 13 (3 planks, 10 ladders). After reaching the top, I went back and tried again, thinking to prune some resource usage a bit.
My final score on that second run came out to 23 (6 planks, 16 ladders, 1 piston). The spoiler below has some tricks that I used to get that score.
Use levers on gold blocks to trigger hidden redstone reactions. This often creates a waterfall shortcut that reduces resources needed to reach the next area. One gold block is far too high to reach, though, and is a waste of resources.
Use the natural height to your advantage. Zigzagging your way up side walls is often more resource efficient than trying to build straight to your goal.
The right resource can make the difference. Planks can be put nearly anywhere but are only one block high. Pistons are two blocks high, but require a surface with a lever to use. Ladders can only be used on walls, but can get you two blocks higher if you jump onto it.
At least two chests can be reached later by scaling to the very top of the map and dropping down the slope, instead of using blocks to reach them when first given the chance. It takes some time to climb back up, but increases score for free.
The iron and lapiz tower is best done from the outside instead of the inside. Going up the inside of the tower takes a lot of resources, but Shift + walking on the outside edge requires only 2 blocks to reach the top. This is a very frustrating process, though, especially if you fall!
Overall, it is a very fun map and I've shown it to several fellow Minecrafters and they enjoy it too. I'd recommend finding a 1.7.3 binary if you want to play this, but it's worth it if you like puzzles. I'm currently also enjoying the adventure map Asteroid 5251, so great work on both, Rahz.

Be warned, several of these puzzles are among the most devious puzzles ever concieved in Minecraft. There's no shame in loosing.
How far can you make it?
's to you :biggrin.gif:
P.S you should give some hints aha like the pipe works one I had no clue where to even start
P.P.S I found the two secret vaults though and did the diamond rooms the other ones are just so hard :tongue.gif:
Other people are free, of course, to give hints. :cool.gif:
Hint 2:
Good luck. :smile.gif:

Finally beat it, had one ladder to spare, pretty damn well made map
