A partner is someone that joins Mario on his adventure (temporarily, or permanently). They all have different abilities, both in battle and in the field. Partners are generally weaker than Mario but are nonetheless extremely helpful. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, partners have their own badges designated by the letter P (partner); they still share Mario's Badge Points, however. In Super Paper Mario partners were replaced by Pixls. Mario does not have any battle partners in Paper Mario: Sticker Star, Paper Mario: Color Splash, and Paper Mario: The Origami King. Mario's only partner in Sticker Star is Kersti, who helps Mario in the field (with minor exceptions for battle hints; she does not have any attacks of her own). In Color Splash, Huey replaces Kersti and works similarly, and Olivia also shares this role in The Origami King.
Mario has a total of eight partners in Paper Mario and seven in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

- Goombaria and Twink were going to be Mario's partners in Paper Mario but were scrapped.
- In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, all of Mario's previous partners were going to be in-game but were scrapped. Only Bow and Parakarry make it in the final cut.
- In Super Paper Mario, all of the partners from the previous games have scrapped models found in the game's files. They still appear, however, in the form of Catch Cards.
- Goombella is implied to be visiting the Chomp Ruins during the events of Paper Mario: Sticker Star, as she leaves an unfinished paper of her findings behind that can be found with the Vacuum Thing sticker.
