Open Access at Northumbria University

Library Open Access Fund

The Library's Open Access fund combines local fund and a block grant provided by UKRI, for the payment of fees associated with making research that acknowledges Research Councils funding openly available.

How to apply for funding

  1. Prior to submission contact openaccess@northumbria.ac.uk to secure funding.
  2. The team will advise when you must gain approval from your Departmental Head of Research and Knowledge Exchange (DRKE) or Unit of Assessment Lead.
  3. On acceptance deposit your Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) in Pure.
  4. Choose a CC BY licence during the publication process.

UKRI funded authors

Research Council award holders are automatically eligible for payment of Article Processing Charges (APCs) associated with their published research but must comply with the requirements of UKRI Open Access policy:

Institutional Fund

Where research does not acknowledge Research Councils funding, authors can access the Library Open Access fund with the approval of the Departmental Head of Research and Knowledge Exchange for their academic department, or their REF Unit of Assessment Lead. Decisions about access to the fund will be made on academic grounds. Publications funded by the institution must be published under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence.
