How to Recruit Custom Companions in Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader

Learn how to recruit custom companions in WH40K Rogue Trader and create your very own customized team.

Everyone has a different approach to CRPGs, but what I love about them is that I can create my own custom party of characters. The neat part is that Owlcat enables you to do so quite early on. Here’s how to recruit custom companions in Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader.

How to Create a Custom Party in Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader

To create a custom party in Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader, you’ll have to speak to High Factotum Janris Danrok. From your throne chair on your Voidship’s bridge, simply walk beyond the star map. He’s located to the right, just next to a massive pillar. I recommend toggling on the “see interactables” button, which, for me, is the PS button on a controller. This highlights all the characters on the bridge.

Follow these exact steps to create your custom party:

  • Talk to Janris.
  • Locate the “I wish to bolster my retinue with skilled fighters” dialogue option at the bottom.
  • This will open character creation.
  • Finalize your choices, as with your main Rogue Trader.
  • The custom mercenary will appear next to Janris.
  • You can assign them to your party when you visit a new planet or station.

In this way, you always choose who to bring before a mission, whether it be your custom companion or the game’s story ones like Abelard, Cassia, etc. If you want to remove them from your party, just click on them during team select before a mission and click on another companion to take their place.

Doing this allows you to recruit up to five custom mercenaries and create a full six-member custom party in Rogue Trader. Then again, while this introduces mechanical customization since you tailor your custom mercenary’s build to your liking, you won’t get to experience the base game’s companion’s stories like Idira’s, Argenta’s, etc., so there’s a narrative tradeoff.

That said, you can more easily master a custom companion since you created them and chose their specific Homeworld, Origin, and Archetype yourself instead of a pre-made story companion’s selection by Owlcat.

Furthermore, each recruitment of a custom mercenary will reduce your Profit factor by one, so I’d recommend not to over indulge, at least in the beginning.

Now you know how to recruit custom companions in Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader. I wish CRPGs allowed this feature more often and earlier in the game without too much tradeoff. Sometimes you just want to create your custom ragtag team of scoundrels. You can find more of our WH40K Rogue Trader guides right here.
